The impact of economic reform on agriculture is a mixed one. She has attained near self-sufficiency in food grains. Both green revolution and liberalisation of India's agriculture have favourable effects on overall as well as agricultural GDP. But the structural adjustment programme for agriculture has increased the vulnerability of agriculture. Stagnation of net sown area, plateauing yield level, deterioration of soil quality, reduction in per capita land availability and the adverse effect of climate change are the major challenges to Indian agriculture. Moreover, the increased rate of population is pressurizing the agricultural sector for enhanced food production. In the last few years, the Indian economy has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Agriculture has a greater role in the development of industries such as textiles, sugar, tea etc. The prosperity of these agro -based industries depends upon the availability of inputs from the agricultural sector. The contribution of the Impact on Prices of Agri Inputs- Due to disruption in supply chain owing to restrictions on movement of vehicles and closure of shops and markets, prices of agri inputs viz. seeds (8.8%), fertilisers (10.0%), pesticides (9.0%), fodder (11.6%), increased in the range of 9 to 12 per cent. suggest that climate change is likely to impose signi-cant costs on the Indian economy unless farmers can quickly recognize and adapt to increasing temperatures. Such rapid adaptation may be less plausible in a developing country, where access to information and capital is limited. The economy of India is characterized as a developing market economy, it is the world's fifth largest economy by nominal GDP and it is the world's sixth-largest manufacturer and employees over 57 million people. COVID-19 not only This paper estimates the impact of climate change on Indian agriculture. I use a 40-year district-level panel data set covering over 200 Indian districts to estimate the e¤ect of random year-to-year variation in weather on agricultural output. These panel estimates incorporate farmers within-year adaptations to annual weather shocks. In this chapter we analyze the Indian economy in the pre Covid-19 period and assess the potential impact of the shock on various segments of the economy. We discuss the policies that have been announced so far to ameliorate the economic shock and finally end with some policy recommendations. 2.
